Your thyroid creates and produces hormones that play a role in many different systems throughout your body. When your thyroid makes either too much or too little of these hormones, it’s called thyroid disease. There are several different types of thyroid disease, including hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.

Both overactive (hyperthyroidism) and underactive (hypothyroidism) thyroid conditions can have emotional implications. Here are some common signs and symptoms to be aware of:

Overactive Thyroid (Hyperthyroidism):

  • Anxiety, nervousness, or irritability
  • Mood swings or emotional instability
  • Restlessness or difficulty concentrating
  • Weight loss despite increased appetite
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Increased sensitivity to heat
  • Insomnia or difficulty sleeping

Underactive Thyroid (Hypothyroidism):

  • Fatigue or lethargy
  • Depression or feeling down
  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
  • Dry skin and hair
  • Sensitivity to cold temperatures
  • Sleep disturbances or excessive sleepiness
  • It’s important to note that these symptoms can vary from person to person, and a proper diagnosis from a healthcare professional is crucial for accurate assessment and treatment.
